I am sure you have heard this buzz word of modern technology, “Artificial Intelligence.” As per Wikipedia, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the intelligence demonstrated by machines.” And the essence of these machines is a computer of some sort. But why it is called artificial, isn’t all intelligence artificial.
I am sure your brain is filled with counterarguments by now but hear me out first. Let’s start from the beginning of computers. Originally, computers were only equipped to follow the instructions, very simple to start with, and as they evolved, the complex ones. They were built only to follow the instructions. These machines were never wrong, but only the instructions given to them. The first step towards artificial intelligence was data sciences (correlations, pattern recognitions, and predictions), and we built these instructions for machines to analyze the data, correlate the variables, recognize the pattern, make the prediction and execute based on that prediction. With this, machines were able to make certain decisions on their own within the confines of given instructions and data. Data grew, new patterns unfolded, and so did the extent of decision-making for machines. Machines started to learn from their mistakes and began improving the instructions, patterns, and then predictions. This intelligence is still confined to the available data and acquired experience.
Now, let’s look into human intelligence. We were not born with the intelligence of the modern age. Initially, we were also following the instructions given by nature, straightforward to start with, and as we evolved, the complex ones. We then started passing those instructions to our children. Slowly we started to understand the new pattern from nature and started rewiring our instructions. All of these are still limited to the patterns we can recognize and predictions we can make out. As the data around us grew, our decision making improved, and we started providing better instructions to our subsequent generations. We don’t know everything; we work on what we know, make mistakes, and sometimes learn from it.
Do you see any similarities in the evolution of both humans and machines? Both followed the same path. Yes, for humans, it took billions of years and for machines a few hundreds. This is because humans are lazy learners, and nature is a quiet teacher. On the other hand, computers are quick learners, and humans are aggressive teachers.
I think to show that humans are superior to machines, we call it artificial intelligence. Intelligence is no different in machines than in us. What differentiates the two, is emotions. Because emotions are not data-driven, they are natural. So, we don’t need to worry about artificial intelligence taking over the human race. The problem will start when machines will learn the emotions, and the gap between “Natural Emotions” and “Artificial Emotions” will be null.
